Understanding planned clinical trials provide a cue on how the industry moves.
According to GlobalData, of the trials planned for 2022 (data as of 15 May 2022) APAC region has the bulk of the clinical trials with 54%, followed by North America and Europe at 27% and 20%, respectively. As per the information available in GlobalData’s Pharma Intelligence Center’s Clinical Trials Database, there are 2,430 trials planned for 2022 in APAC as of 15 May 2022.
Of the total planned clinical trials, China has 53% of the trials, followed by India at 17% and Australia at 12%.
Pharmaceutical companies sponsor approximately 31% of the planned trials, while academic institutions and non-industry sponsors sponsor the remaining 69% of trials. Among the top ten industry sponsors, four companies are from China.
In APAC, Oncology has the most number of planned trials followed by central nervous system and infectious disease.
Oncology tops the list for both industry and non-industry-sponsored clinical trials. For industry-sponsored trials, infectious diseases and the central nervous system are in second and third place, respectively. In the non-industry sponsored category, central nervous system and Infectious diseases trials take second and third, respectively.
We expect the same trend for 2022. The data clearly show emergence of China and India as top destinations to conduct clinical trials in APAC.
