According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), global lead reserves had significant share as of January 2021, other notable countries were Australia, China, Russia, Peru and Mexico. These were followed by Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Bolivia and Sweden.

Global lead mine production declined in 2020, primarily due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the temporary suspension of several mines, including Raura, Uchucchacua, Milpo No.1 and Atacocha, and the El Porvenir, Bismark and Francisco I. Madero, Antamina, Aguilar and Tara mines. In addition, mine-specific issues such as a pit failure at Vedanta’s Skorpion mine, a breakdown in the ore conveyor belt at the Boliden’s Tara mine and an illegal blockade at Americas Gold and Silver Corp.’s San Rafael mine further disrupted lead mine production.

Global lead consumption

Lead is predominantly used in manufacturing lead-acid batteries, which are widely consumed in automobiles. In 2020, slowing global economic activity, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, affected lead consumption globally. The largest declines were in the US, Germany, India, Mexico and Japan– this was primarily due to a decline in the automotive industry.

China accounted for major lead demand in 2020 and was followed by the US with. Other countries among the world’s top five consumers were India, South Korea and Germany.

Major lead producer

Glencore Plc

Glencore Plc, the largest lead producer globally, produced a significant percentage of lead in 2020, suffering a decline compared with 2019. This was primarily due to maintenance works at its Kazakhstan mining operations, coupled with the suspension of operations at the Aguilar mine in Q1 2020 for safety reasons. In addition, amid COVID-19 pandemic, the company halted the operations at the Antamina mine in Peru for a six-week shutdown during the June 2020 quarter. Besides lead, the company also produces zinc, copper, aluminum, nickel, iron ore, oil products, coal, wheat, corn, barley rice, oilseeds, sugar, canola, ferroalloys and cobalt. The company's operations include the refinement, processing, storage and transportation of metals and minerals, as well as energy and agricultural products. The company’s key operating mines include the Mount Isa Zinc, McArthur River, Animon, Chungar Mining Unit, Casapalca-6 and Andaychagua mines.
