Executive summary

Global zinc production is expected to recover in 2021, after registering a decline in 2020, mainly due to COVID-19-related lockdowns and restrictions. According to the International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG), during the first four months of 2021, global zinc mine production increased year on year. This was primarily due to an increase in production from Australia, Bolivia and China. In contrast, production in Canada, Finland and Kazakhstan was lower than the same period in 2020. Overall, 2021 production growth is expected to be supported by strong growth in Bolivia and Peru.

On a country basis, the largest declines are estimated to have been in Bolivia, China and Peru. Globally majority of zinc originates from these three countries. In contrast, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, zinc production from Mexico, India, Brazil and Ireland increased by a significant share in 2020 over 2019.

Global Zinc Consumption

Zinc is mainly used in the production of galvanized steel, which widely used in automobiles, home appliances, construction, infrastructure, ships, light industry, machinery and batteries. Demand for galvanized steel is highly dependent on investments in the construction, infrastructure and automobiles industries. In addition, zinc consumption in batteries for energy storage is also advancing, as its manufacturing is inexpensive compared to other batteries. Globally, majority of zinc was used for galvanization in 2020 and for other uses as for alloying, brass, bronze, and other uses such as chemicals.

Global Zinc Trade

Global zinc concentrates trade declined in 2020, amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the major trading countries suspending trading activities during the months of April and May 2020. China, the largest importer of zinc ore and concentrates, was completely under lockdown during the first two months of 2020, resulting in zero imports during that period.

Major zinc producer

Glencore Plc remained the largest zinc producer in the world. Besides zinc, the company also produces lead, copper, aluminum, nickel, iron ore, oil products, coal, wheat, corn, barley rice, oilseeds, sugar, canola, ferroalloys and cobalt.
