Impact of COVID-19 on Global bauxite mining

Global bauxite production grew by a significant percentage in 2020, supported by higher production from the world’s second-largest producer, Guinea, with an increase in production in 2020. Meanwhile, production from Brazil and Indonesia was reported to have increased. These helped to offset lower output in Australia, where production fell by a significant margin.

The largest bauxite producing companies are Rio Tinto, Alcoa, and Norsk Hydro, which collectively produced the majority of bauxite in 2020. Rio Tinto is the largest producer in 2020, mainly due to the ramp-up from the CBG mine expansion in Guinea, stable performance from the Pacific mine and additional volume from the start-up of the Amrun mine at the end of 2019.

Global bauxite production

Production from Brazil and Indonesia rose significantly in 2020. Brazil’s production rose due to higher production from Norsk Hydro's Paragominas bauxite mine, which temporarily suspended operations from 18 August to 8 October 2020, reaching full capacity by the end of the year.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, global bauxite production was estimated to have grown in 2020. Growth was mainly supported by higher output from Guinea, which is the world’s second-largest bauxite producer, after Australia in 2020. Guinea’s output was estimated to have increased in 2020. This growth was mainly supported by the start of Boffa Bauxite mine in 2020 and the production ramp-up from the Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC) mine, which is owned by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and began operations in 2019.

Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto, the largest bauxite producer in the world, is mainly driven by the ramp-up from the CBG mine expansion in Guinea, along with stable performance from the Pacific mine and additional volume from the start-up of Amrun mine during the end of 2019. Besides bauxite, the company also produces iron ore, copper, diamonds, gold and uranium, as well as industrial minerals such as borax, titanium and salt. It operates port and rail facilities, smelters, refineries, processing plants, shipping, commercial and research facilities.

The company’s operating bauxite mines include the Sangaredi in Guinea, Weipa and Gove mines in Australia and the MRN mine in Brazil.

Alcoa Corp.

The company wholly owns or has stakes in eight active bauxite mines: the Sangaredi mine in Guinea, the Al Baitha mine in Saudi Arabia, the Huntly and Willowdale mines in Australia and the MRN, Juruti Bauxite, Pocos de Caldas and Jabuti mines in Brazil. It produces aluminum ingot, including billet and slab, aluminum derivatives, aluminum powder, specialty alumina and aluminum sheets and plates.
