Diamond mining in Botswana 

Botswana has deposits of diamond, copper, nickel and silver and mining plays an important role in the country’s economy. The diamond mining industry is export oriented and rough diamonds contributed major share of the country’s total exports revenue. Significant diamond reserves are found in the Central and Kgalagadi districts. 

The diamond mining industry is dominated by De Beers SA. The country’s mining industry is governed by the Ministry of Mineral, Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR), and sub-departments such as the Department of Geological Survey (DGS), the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) and the Department of Mines (DoM). The Mines and Mineral Act, 1999, regulates laws related to the mines and the minerals sector. The act covers the issuance, renewal and termination of mineral concessions, provides for the payment of royalties, and covers all incidental and connected matters. 1

Demand from end-use market 

Global demand for polished diamonds is mainly influenced by the diamond jewelry sector. The US was the largest consumer of polished diamonds followed by China and India. The primary export markets for Botswana’s diamond were the US, India and Belgium.

De Beers SA 

De Beers SA (De Beers) is a diamond mining and marketing company involved in the exploration, mining and marketing of rough diamonds. The company produces and markets rough diamonds from its mining operations located in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada. In Botswana and Namibia, it owns diamond mines in equal shares with the respective governments through joint ventures Debswana Diamond Company Pvt Ltd and Namdeb Diamond Corporation Pvt Ltd respectively. 

Lucara Diamond Corp. 

Lucara Diamond Corp (Lucara) is a mineral exploration and mining company headquartered in Canada. Its two prime projects are the Karowe and the Mothae diamond mines in Botswana and Lesotho respectively. The Karowe mine is located in the north-central part of Botswana and contains diamond in the Kimberlite ore, tri-lobate Kimberlite pipe.
