Diamond mining in Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has deposits of diamond, coal, gold, copper, cobalt, zinc, uranium, tin, silver, manganese, tungsten and cadmium. Mining plays an important role in the Congolese economy. The Democratic Republic of the Congo had the world’s second-largest diamond reserves at the end of 2014. Significant diamond reserves are found primarily in the Kasai Occidental and Kasai Oriental provinces.
Artisanal and small-scale mining account for the majority of the country’s rough diamond production and around one-third of the rough diamonds produced in the country are illegally moved out of the country to neighboring nations every year.
The diamond mining industry is led by Mwana Africa Plc, and the mining industry is governed by the Ministry of Mines. The Mining Code: Law No 007/2002 regulates the minerals sector.
Democratic Republic of the Congo diamond mining
According to the USGS, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had the world’s second-largest diamond reserves. Substantial diamond reserves are located in Kasai Occidental and Kasai Oriental, most being alluvial and kimberlitic deposit types. Other potential diamond reserves remain little explored, including kimberlite pipes in northeastern parts of the country.
Kimberlite is a type of potassic volcanic rock, known as a diamond-bearing rock, which mainly occurs in upright structures in the Earth's crust known as kimberlite pipe. Kimberlite rocks containing diamonds are worn out over time by rivers or streams and washed away downstream, leading to alluvial diamond deposits.
