Diamond mining in South Africa
According to the USGS, South Africa had the world’s fifth-largest diamond reserves as of January 2018, holding a significant position of global reserves. Substantial diamond reserves are located in the Kimberley region in Northern Cape, the Free State and North West provinces.
Diamond deposits are available mostly in the form of lamproites and kimberlite ore type. The country’s main diamond producing mines – the Kimberley mine in Kimberley region, and the Northern Cape and Venetia mines located in Limpopo – were among the world’s largest kimberlite-type deposits. Kimberlite is a type of potassic volcanic rock, known as a diamond bearing rock. It mainly occurs in vertical structures in the earth's crust and is known as kimberlite pipe.
