Impact of COVID-19 on Nickel production in Indonesia

Global nickel mine production held at a significant position in 2021, after registering an estimated decline in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Output from Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil will be significant contributors to the overall growth. In contrast, production is expected to decline in Russia, South Africa and Finland, owing to lower production from the Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky mines and the planned closure of African Rainbow Minerals’ Nkomati mine in 2021.

Indonesia nickel reserves

According to the USGS, Indonesia had the largest reserves of nickel holding a significant position of the global total. In Indonesia, saprolite deposits contain higher-grade nickel ores, while limonite is low-grade nickel ore. The Yiwan mine in South Kalimantan is the country’s largest in terms of ore reserves. The Weda Bay, Sorowako, Tapunopaka, and Gag Island mines are some of the other significant mines.

Nickel production

Global nickel mine production is expected to reach a significant position in 2021, after registering an estimated decline amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Output from Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil will be significant contributors to overall growth. In contrast, production is expected to decline in Russia, South Africa and Finland, owing to lower production from Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky mines and the planned closure of African Rainbow Minerals’ Nkomati mine in 2021.

Indonesia is expected to be the largest contributor to the global supply in 2021, primarily due to the expansion of domestic nickel industry and the development of the high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) projects in the country.
