In 2021, China registered a 13% increase in terms of fixed-line connections, as the subscriber base reached 548 million users in comparison to that in 2020 led by increase in consumption in residential broadband due to the COVID-19 pandemic. China continues to remain the largest consumer of the internet in the fixed-line segment. Japan ranked second, accounting for 4% of the global fixed-line connections. In 2021, the fixed-line subscriber base in Japan increased marginally by 1%, taking the subscriber base to 432 million users owing to the recovery in economic activity due to the lifting of lockdowns. The fixed-line internet subscriber base in Japan grew at a CAGR of 2.88% during 2018–21. The Japanese internet market is controlled by telecom giants, including NTT, DOCOMO Inc, and KDDI Corporation.

Germany remained the third-largest market for fixed-line internet, with a subscriber base of 380 million users as of 2021. The German internet market is controlled by telecom giants such as Deutsche Telekom AG, United Internet AG, Telefonica, S.A., and Vodafone Group Plc.

Brazil is the fourth-largest internet market by fixed-line connections, accounting for 3% of the global fixed-line connections with a subscriber base of 376 million users as of 2021. The internet market in Brazil is controlled by major telecom companies, including OI SA, America Movil, SA DE CV, and Telefonica.
