The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about sweeping changes in the education sector. The methods of learning and teaching have been transformed with the adoption of technology and digital methods to close the gap following the suspension of traditional classroom teaching. “Edtech” is the term that refers to the combined use of technology and educational theories to facilitate learning. The changes led to the growth of a number of startups and addition of millions of users through online learning platforms. The increase in the number of users and the phenomenal growth of the Edtech sector has led to firms expanding their operations. Edtech companies have expanded their operations aggressively through acquisitions, partnerships, and marketing techniques. To sustain growth and serve the increasing number of users, companies have been hiring at record levels.

Hiring in record numbers

Vivi, an Australia-based Edtech startup, has announced plans to hire more sales and marketing teams across Asia, the Americas, and Europe after it raised $20 million from Quad partners in December 2021. During the same period, the global head of talent acquisition at Duolingo announced that the company was considering hiring people for the core product function – managers, engineers, and designers.

The Edtech startup BasicFirst has stepped up its hiring process and aims at hiring nearly 1,000 employees across India and the US. PlanetSpark, the Edtech startup plans to increase its current teacher strength by 500%, and for this expansion, it will hire 10,000 English teachers by the end of 2022. The Edtech sector has also reported increasing demand for tutors and educational staff, along with demand for employees in backend and support functions.

Edtech jobs attract educators

The demand for workforce in the Edtech industry has resulted in opportunities for educators, besides their conventional teaching jobs. These opportunities have provided them added benefits.

New roles: Edtech has created new roles such as online assessment managers, virtual lab instructors, online tutors, remote proctors, student engagement executives, student counselors, course managers, etc. Consequently, job postings have increased in the sector.

Employee benefits: Educators are often poorly compensated, but the Edtech industry offers huge salaries, benefits, career growth opportunities, and flexible work hours. Some of the startups even offer employee stock option plans (ESOPs) to retain their employees.
