Video gaming is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the industry. Video gaming comprises different modes of gaming, including console gaming, mobile gaming, and PC gaming, out of which PC gaming accounts for 25% with a market value of almost $45 billion in 2021.
The video gaming industry was among the few businesses that thrived during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes the creation, promotion, and monetization of video games.
PC gaming is a form of video game that involves the usage of Desktop and Laptop peripherals as a platform for gaming and entertainment purposes. The growth in PC gaming has seen a steady rise over recent years as the demand is not just limited to professional gamers but normal users as well. This is because of the seamless experience which PC gaming offers to the users in comparison to other forms of gaming.
The market size of PC gaming in South & Central America reached $641 million in 2021, with a growth of just 2% from the previous year. Though the growth is positive, it has been on a decline for the past two years owing to the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns which had people confined to their homes for the better part of the two years.
While other parts of the world saw a significant increase in the demand for console gaming during the pandemic as almost all the outdoor facilities were shut down and people spent most of their time in their homes resulting in an increase in the market for indoor game activities, the South & Central America is an exception where the growth in market size wasn’t as big, as it was one of the worst hit regions during the pandemic and hence, people became thrifty.
Brazil is the market leader in PC gaming in South & Central America with a share of over 85%. The PC gaming market in South & Central America grew at a CAGR of 7.8%, the lowest among all the regions, during 2017–2021. The growth was remarkable for two years prior to 2020, suggesting an increase in the consumption of video gaming products, which promises healthy growth going forward as the pandemic is subsiding.
The major companies in South & Central America that have a strong presence in the global video gaming market include Microsoft and Sony.
