Nokia to Provide 5G Radio Access Network

As the largest mobile carrier in India prepares to offer next-generation wireless services throughout the country, Nokia announced on October 17, 2022, that Reliance Jio, a telecom service provider in India, selected it as a significant supplier. Under a multi-year agreement, Nokia will provide 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment to Reliance Jio, which has more than 420 million subscribers.

Base stations, high capacity 5G Massive MIMO antennas, Remote Radio Heads to support various frequency bands, and self-organizing network software are some of the tools from Nokia's AirScale portfolio that will be provided. The network is viewed as essential for future technologies such as self-driving cars and artificial intelligence, and 5G data speeds in India are expected to be roughly 10 times faster than those of 4G.

In a $19 billion 5G spectrum auction in August, Reliance purchased airwaves worth $11 billion and had already begun offering 5G services in a few towns. It is also collaborating with Google, a division of Alphabet Inc., to produce a low-cost 5G smartphone. The global market size of 5G technology services increased significantly in 2022 in comparison to that in 2021, according to GlobalData.

The government is persuading leading mobile phone manufacturers, including Apple Inc. and Samsung, to prioritize releasing software upgrades to promote 5G amid worries that many of their models are not prepared for the high-speed service as India's telecom service providers roll out 5G services. At a time when various countries including India have either prohibited or discouraged the use of China's Huawei in national networks, the Reliance-Nokia agreement is timely and significant.
