Scope 1 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions of Major Technology Companies in 2021

  • Scope 1 emissions result from sources that the firm owns or controls, such as fuel burnt by the company's vehicles
  • Amazon, PayPal, Intel, Vodafone, and Mitsubishi are major contributors to Scope 1 GHG emissions
  • In 2021, Amazon’s Scope 1 emissions accounted for 10.6 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq) which is 0.3% of Amazon’s total GHG emissions

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are one of the main causes of rising global warming and the technology and communication industry accounts for approximately 2% to 3% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. A substantial amount of greenhouse gases emitted by burning oil, fossil fuels, and other sources include CO2, methane, and NOx. It has become increasingly vital for major contributing industries to record greenhouse gas emissions throughout operations, as corporate GHG emissions have increased.

GHG emissions are generally classified into Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. Scope 1 emissions are direct GHG emissions that occur from sources that are owned or controlled by the company. Scope 2 (Indirect GHG emissions) accounts for GHG emissions from the purchased or acquired electricity. Scope 3 refers to the company's other indirect emissions beyond the company’s direct operations and occur in the company’s value chain, such as the upstream transportation and distribution, business travel and purchased goods and services.

Amazon, PayPal, and Intel are major technology companies with a significant amount of Scope 1 emissions. Technology companies are focusing on reducing their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions which occurs due to the direct and indirect operational activities of companies such as fugitive emissions and purchased electricity.

Amazon, one of the largest online retailers and web service providers in the world, is a leading Scope 1 greenhouse gas emitter. In 2021, Amazon’s Scope 1 emissions accounted for 10.6 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq) which is 0.3% of Amazon’s total GHG emissions. To reduce GHG emissions, the technology company has created a Climate Pledge Fund with a $2 billion investment to support sustainable development.

PayPal, a technology platform and digital payments company, is the second-largest contributor to Scope 1 emissions. In 2021, PayPal’s direct emissions were around 2.87 MtCO2eq, accounting for 10.7% of PayPal’s total GHG emissions. To promote sustainability, has made commitments to reach 100% renewable energy use for data centers by 2023.

In 2021, Intel’s Scope 1 emissions accounted for 6.77% of its total GHG emissions. Intel has set a target to achieve 100% renewable electricity use across its global manufacturing operations by 2030.
