Twitter, the microblogging platform, reported 229 million monetizable daily active users (mDAU) globally in Q1 2022, up by 15% from the same period last year. Twitter disaggregates its mDAU into two segments: the US and International. In the US, the mDAU was 39.6 million users for Q1 2022, up 6.4% compared to Q1 of the prior year. For the international segment, Twitter reported 189.4 million mDAU for Q1 2022, up 18.1% compared to the same period in the prior year.

The mDAU metric measures users' daily active engagement and user growth benefited from new ad formats, tighter attribution, and better targeting. The growth in mDAU, thus helps attract more content partners, advertisers, and platform partners, thus generating more advertisement revenue for Twitter.

Monetizable Daily Active Usage or Users (mDAU): is defined by Twitter as the accounts of people, organizations, or other accounts who logged in or were otherwise authenticated and accessed Twitter on any given day through twitter.com, thus enabling the Twitter applications to show ads, or paid Twitter products, including subscriptions to such accounts.

In March of 2019, Twitter launched a feature that allowed people to link multiple separate accounts together in order to conveniently switch between accounts, resulting in all linked accounts being counted as mDAU. But this error was rectified in Q4 2021, when the definition for mDAU was updated to also include "paid Twitter products, including subscriptions”. This change is effective from the fourth quarter of 2021 and for future periods, and for the past reported data, this change of definition is updated for the data from Q4 2020 onwards.
