Airbus: Annual GHG Emissions (2020 – 2021, Million Tonnes CO2 Equivalent)

  • In 2021, Airbus’ total GHG emissions increased by 3% on an annual basis
  • Airbus’ Scope 3 emissions accounted for 99.8% of its total GHG emissions in 2021
  • Airbus aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 net GHG emissions by 63% by 2030 compared to 2015

Global warming is threatening life on earth, posing risk to fresh water, food, and energy supplies. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the primary cause of global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are GHGs produced by the combustion of oil, fossil fuels, and other sources.

The aviation industry accounts for approximately 2% to 3% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. GHG emissions are produced by industry operations such as energy consumption, product manufacture, and product use. The air transport industry has set a climate goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Airbus SE (Airbus) specializes in providing aeronautics, defense and space related services. The company manufactures commercial aircraft, passenger aircraft, helicopters, corporate jets, unmanned aerial systems, and freighter aircraft. In 2021, the company reported total GHG emissions of around 465.56 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq), up 3% from 2020.

Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions are the three categories of GHG emissions. Scope 1 emissions result from sources that the company owns or controls, such as energy generation and airport vehicles. Indirect GHG emissions from the off-site generation of energy purchased by the airport operator, are referred to as Scope 2. Scope 3 emissions refer to the company's other indirect emissions beyond the company’s direct operations and occur in the company’s value chain, such as the use of the commercial aircraft and helicopters, and purchase of goods and services.

Scope 3 emissions account for most of Airbus’ overall GHG emissions, accounting for 99.8% of total GHG emissions (464.73 MtCO2eq) in 2021. In 2021, the company's Scope 1 emissions fell by 4%, and Scope 2 emissions fell by 10%.

Airbus aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 net GHG emissions by 63% by 2030 compared to 2015.The company also aims to lead the decarbonization of the aerospace sector with an aim to bring the first zero-emission commercial aircraft to market by 2035.
