Overview of Top Five Green Building Markets in 2021:

Construction, being one of the most heavily regulated industries, is increasingly subject to more stringent rules about the environmental impact of putting up buildings. The World Green Building Council estimates that construction and the energy required to operate buildings account for around 40% of global carbon emissions.

Long-term environmental sustainability is attracting more attention, leading to developments intended to drastically reduce the environmental harm of new builds. The construction industry attracts its fair share of criticism around the world; the primary areas of concern are air, water, and noise pollution. As an industry, it also has sometimes been a slow adopter of new practices and technologies. Now that is beginning to change, as the need for greater sustainability begins to influence leading companies more than was formerly the norm.

Green construction is increasingly a subject of concern to governments around the world, even the United Nations. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has been attributed to playing an influential role in the growth of more environmentally friendly construction. A Green building is a building that is both environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout the lifecycle of the building – design, construction, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. The building considers the impact on the environment and quality of life of occupants during every step of the building lifecycle. The construction uses non-hazardous, reusable, and recyclable while constructing the building. It also uses renewable energy such as solar and, also ensures efficient utilization of energy, water, and other resources.

At present, the percentage of companies which will have a majority of ‘green’ projects is said to be rising rapidly, and much of this growth is expected to come from developing nations. The five countries leading the market are China, the United States of America, India, Indonesia, and Brazil.

In 2021, China was the leading green building market, valued at $92,185 million, up 4.1% compared to 2020. This is followed by the United States of America, which is ranked second at $86,010 million, up 0.9% compared to 2020, while the other three markets (India, Indonesia, and Brazil) have a cumulative market value of $63,740 million in 2021.
