The overall beer market witnessed a decline in sales of beer amid the pandemic, on-premise, and on-the-go consumption of beer declined in 2020, as more people stayed at home, and tourist arrivals waned due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In annual terms, the beer sales by value contracted in 2020.

Rising health and wellbeing concerns amid the COVID-19 outbreak pushed Japanese consumers towards low-calorie beer, non-alcoholic beers are likely to gain popularity among Japanese consumers.

In 2020, beer was the largest category in the alcoholic beverages industry in Japan, with Asahi Group leading the sales (by value), followed by Kirin Group and Suntory Holdings.  

Beer includes fermented alcoholic beverages that are typically, but not exclusively, made from malt to which hops have been added.

ASAHI GROUP is the largest company in Japan’s beer market with nearly two-fifths of the market share 

Asahi Group was the market leader in 2020, with the brand Asahi owning a significant stakein the Japanese beer market. The other portfolio brands of Asahi Group includes Nikka Cidre, Grolsch & Foster`s.

Kirin Group captures nearly a third of the market share, second-largest beer company in Japan

Kirin Group’s regular strength beers collectively lost volumes, while it’s no alcohol beers and strong beers gained volumes, due to a shift in consumers’ tastes and preferences.

The other market-leading positions were held by Suntory Holdings and Sapporo Breweries

Suntory Holdings and Sapporo Breweries held the third and fourth-largest market share in the Beer market in Japan.

Suntory, the flagship brand owned by Suntory Holdings, had a major market presence in Japan’s beer market.

Sapporo and Yebisu were the major brands of the Sapporo Breweries.
