Meta: Annual GHG Emissions (2017 – 2020, Million Tonnes CO2 Equivalent)

  • Meta's total GHG emissions decreased by 6% annually in 2020
  • In 2020, Meta's Scope 3 emissions accounted for about 99.1% of its total GHG emissions
  • Meta has set a target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2030

Global warming will threaten the availability of clean water, food, and energy. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the main cause of global warming. GHGs such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are produced by the combustion of oil and fossil fuels.

The technology and communication industry contributes about 2% to 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. GHG emissions are generated by industrial operations such as energy consumption, product manufacturing, and product consumption. Digital technology has the potential to reduce world carbon emissions by 17%, according to the International Telecommunication Union. The technology industry can help other industries increase efficiency, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Meta Platforms Inc (Meta), formerly Facebook Inc, is a provider of social networking, advertising, and business insight solutions. The company reported total GHG emissions of 4.48 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq) in 2020, a decrease of 6% from 2019.

A GHG emission can be classified into three categories: scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3. Scope 1 emissions are those produced by a company's own or controlled sources, such as the fuel burned by its vehicles. Scope 2 is the indirect GHG emissions from the generation of purchased energy, such as the power to operate the company's facilities. As for scope 3 emissions, these are the indirect emissions resulting from activities beyond the company's direct operations and occur throughout the value chain, including upstream and downstream activities, such as the production of packaging, product transportation, and product use.

In 2020, Meta's scope 3 emissions accounted for 99.1% of its overall GHG emissions (4.44 MtCO2eq). In 2021, the company's Scope 1 emissions were down by 34% and Scope 2 emissions declined by 96%.

Meta has set a target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2030. The company has achieved 100% renewable energy for its global operations, and now has over 2.8 gigawatts of wind and solar projects online.
