Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia, was the largest underground copper-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 205.3 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 8.7 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Olympic Dam Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2061. The second largest underground copper-producing mine with an estimated production of 106.4 thousand tonnes of copper and approximately 32.51 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cadia Mine located in New South Wales. The Cadia Mine is owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd, and is due to operate until 2047.
Mount Isa Copper Mine located in Queensland was the third-largest mine, the Prominent Hill Mine located in South Australia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Carrapateena Mine located in South Australia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated copper production of 91.5 thousand tonnes, 62.9 thousand tonnes and 55.3 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Mount Isa Copper Mine , the Prominent Hill Mine and the Carrapateena Mine had an estimated ROM production of 5.71 mmtpa, 4.17 mmtpa and 4.71 mmtpa respectively. The Mount Isa Copper Mine is owned by Glencore Plcwhich is due to operate until 2023, the Prominent Hill Mine is owned by OZ Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2031 and the Carrapateena Mine is owned by OZ Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2039.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Olympic Dam Mine, Cadia Mine, Mount Isa Copper Mine , Prominent Hill Mine, and Carrapateena Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 521.4 thousand tonnes of copper, 55.80 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
