Escondida Mine in Antofagasta, Chile, was the largest copper-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 1,011 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 141.81 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Escondida Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2078. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 694.7 thousand tonnes and an estimated 0.39 mmtpa of ROM, was the San Vicente Mine located in Potosi, Chile. The San Vicente Mine is owned by Pan American Silver Corp, and is due to operate until 2024.
Collahuasi Mine located in Tarapaca, Chile was the third-largest mine, the El Teniente Mine located in Cachapoal, Chile was the fourth-largest mine, and the Antamina Mine located in Ancash, Peru was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated copper production of 630 thousand tonnes, 463 thousand tonnes and 426.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Collahuasi Mine, the El Teniente Mine and the Antamina Mine had an estimated ROM production of 102.43 mmtpa, 64.09 mmtpa and 55.63 mmtpa respectively. The Collahuasi Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2088, the El Teniente Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2072 and the Antamina Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2088.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Escondida Mine, San Vicente Mine, Collahuasi Mine, El Teniente Mine, and Antamina Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 3,225.4 thousand tonnes of copper, 364.35 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
