Bailey Mine in Pennsylvania, United States, was the largest underground coal-producing mine in the North America region, producing approximately 10.7 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 14.29 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Bailey Mine is owned by Consol Energy Inc. The second largest underground coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 10.1 million tonnes of coal and approximately 13.33 mmtpa of ROM, was the Black Otter Project located in Montana, United States. The Black Otter Project is owned by Gunvor Group Ltd.
Marshall County Mine located in West Virginia, United States was the third-largest mine, the River View Mine located in Kentucky, United States was the fourth-largest mine, and the Sugar Camp Coal Mine located in Illinois, United States was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 10 million tonnes, 8.9 million tonnes and 8.7 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Marshall County Mine, the River View Mine and the Sugar Camp Coal Mine had an estimated ROM production of 14.15 mmtpa, 11.36 mmtpa and 11.5 mmtpa respectively. The Marshall County Mine is owned by ACNR Holdings Inc, the River View Mine is owned by Alliance Resource Partners LP and the Sugar Camp Coal Mine is owned by The Cline Group, LLC.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Bailey Mine, Black Otter Project, Marshall County Mine, River View Mine, and Sugar Camp Coal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 48.4 million tonnes of coal, 64.63 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
