Sishen Mine in Northern Cape, was the largest surface iron ore-producing mine in South Africa, producing approximately 28 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 37.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sishen Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2039. The second largest surface iron ore-producing mine with an estimated production of 12.8 million tonnes of iron ore and approximately 14.1 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kolomela Mine located in Northern Cape. The Kolomela Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2034.
Khumani Mine located in Northern Cape was the third-largest mine, the Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine located in Northern Cape was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tshipi Borwa Mine located in Northern Cape was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated iron ore production of 12.7 million tonnes, 3.3 million tonnes and 1.5 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Khumani Mine, the Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine and the Tshipi Borwa Mine had an estimated ROM production of 19.27 mmtpa, 5.52 mmtpa and 3.68 mmtpa respectively. The Khumani Mine is owned by African Rainbow Minerals Ltdwhich is due to operate until 2046, the Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine is owned by African Rainbow Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2035 and the Tshipi Borwa Mine is owned by Jupiter Mines Ltd which is due to operate until 2077.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Sishen Mine, Kolomela Mine, Khumani Mine, Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine, and Tshipi Borwa Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 58.3 million tonnes of iron ore, 80.47 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
