Cerro Verde Mine in Arequipa, Peru, was the largest surface mine in South and Central America, producing approximately 162.25 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (402.34 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Cerro Verde Mine is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd;Sumitomo Corp;Compania De Minas Buenaventura SAA;Freeport-McMoRan Inc, and is due to operate until 2052. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 141.81 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (1,010.8 thousand tonnes), was the Escondida Mine located in Antofagasta, Chile. The Escondida Mine is owned by JECO Corporation;BHP;Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2079.
Serra Norte Mining Complex located in Para, Brazil was the third-largest mine, the Collahuasi Mine located in Tarapaca, Chile was the fourth-largest mine, and the Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project located in Para, Brazil was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 110.27 mmtpa, 102.43 mmtpa and 88.29 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Serra Norte Mining Complex is owned by Vale SA which is due to operate until 2038, the Collahuasi Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc;Glencore Plc;ENEOS Holdings Inc which is due to operate until 2108 and the Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project is owned by Vale SA which is due to operate until 2062.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Cerro Verde Mine, Escondida Mine, Serra Norte Mining Complex, Collahuasi Mine, and Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project, cumulatively produced approximately 605.04 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
