Global bauxite production grew by a significant percentage in 2020, supported by higher production from the world’s second-largest producer, Guinea, with an increase in production in 2020. Meanwhile, production from Brazil and Indonesia was reported to have increased. These helped to offset lower output in Australia.

Global bauxite production over the forecast period (2021–2025) is expected to grow by 2025, with Guinea, Australia and China being the major contributors to this growth. The production from these countries is forecasted to increase over the period.

Guinea, Australia and Indonesia are the world’s top exporters of bauxite.

Global Bauxite Reserves

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), global bauxite had a significant share as of January 2021. The majority of these are located in Guinea followed by Australia, Vietnam, Brazil and Jamaica.

The principal minerals in bauxite are gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore. The latter is much denser and harder than boehmite, an aluminum oxide hydroxide. Bauxite occurs mainly in tropical and sub-tropical areas, including Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Australia.

Australia

Australia holds the world’s second-largest reserves of bauxite. Most of these are found in Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Tasmania.

Australian bauxite deposits have high grades and are shallow and relatively easy to mine. Rio Tinto’s Weipa mine in Queensland has the largest reserves and Boddington Bauxite in Western Australia has average grades which is among the world's highest-grade deposits. Since reserves at the Weipa mine have been depleting, Rio Tinto has developed the Amrun mine to extend the life of the Weipa mine. The Amrun mine began operations in 2018 and reached its design capacity in the fourth quarter of 2019. Other key bauxite mines include the Huntly, Willowdale and Gove mines.

Bauxite Consumption

Bauxite is primarily used for aluminum production, which is used principally in the transportation, construction, packaging, electrical, machinery equipment and consumer goods industries.

During the first four months of 2021, China produced majority of aluminum, compared to 2020. The growing activities across the country’s construction industry and supportive regulatory policies are likely to boost China’s aluminum production further, leading to an increase in bauxite demand.
