Global bauxite production grew by a significant percentage in 2020, supported by higher production from the world’s second-largest producer, Guinea, with an increase in production in 2020. Meanwhile, production from Brazil and Indonesia was reported to have increased. These helped to offset lower output in Australia.

Global bauxite production over the forecast period (2021–2025) is expected to grow by 2025, with Guinea, Australia and China being the major contributors to this growth. The production from these countries is forecasted to increase over the period.

Guinea, Australia and Indonesia are the world’s top exporters of bauxite.

Bauxite Production

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, global bauxite production was estimated to have grown in 2020. Growth was mainly supported by higher output from Guinea, which is the world’s second-largest bauxite producer after Australia in 2020. Guinea’s output was estimated to have increased in 2020. This growth was mainly supported by the start of Boffa Bauxite mine in 2020 and the production ramp-up from the Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC) mine, which is owned by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and began operations in 2019.

Global Bauxite Trade

Indonesia’s exports have been rising since the easing of the ban on exports of bauxite in 2017. The ban, which was imposed in 2014 on exports of raw materials (including bauxite), aimed to develop the domestic aluminum industry, and the government is intending to reintroduce it from June 2023. In November 2020, the government introduced a new law, under which companies should either build a new aluminum refinery or partner with a refiner to get export permits.

Bauxite Consumption

Bauxite is primarily used for aluminum production, which is used principally in the transportation, construction, packaging, electrical, machinery equipment and consumer goods industries.

During the first four months of 2021, China produced majority of aluminum, compared to 2020. The growing activities across the country’s construction industry and supportive regulatory policies are likely to boost China’s aluminum production further, leading to an increase in bauxite demand.
