Why did power consumption in Indonesia drop in 2020?

Power demand in Indonesia has been increasing in line with GDP growth. Consumption increased between 2000 to 2020. Huge demand for power is predicted during the 2020–2030 forecast period, due to the expected high economic and population growth. As a result, the government is focusing on expanding its generation capacity, particularly in renewable power. Power consumption is expected to increase between 2020 to 2030.

Power consumption is the net electricity consumed by the end users by excluding losses and own consumption and after adjusting exports and imports in a calendar year (fiscal year in some cases). The unit is represented in Gigawatt hours (GWh) and the scope is limited to historic period.

Impact of COVID-19 on Indonesia power market

In first week of March 2020, Indonesia diagnosed its first case of COVID 19. The country implemented lockdown measures, strict social restriction and even shutdown borders however, pandemic spread in the country at a massive scale.

The spread of the pandemic had a severe impact on country power market. Due to the damping on commercial activities in the country the power demand observed a decline. The power consumption in the country in 2020 fell compared to 2019. Both the commercial and industrial segment reported a sharp decline in power consumption. The declined demand of electricity has forced state-utility PT PLN to announce a renegotiation of contracts with the IPP (Independent Power Producer) or private electricity developers to avoid losses in May 2020.

In 2020, household power consumption has the dominant share in power consumption. This was followed by industrial and commercial sector. Power consumption has also been significant in social and government.
