Power consumption in Italy dropped in 2020

From 2000 to 2020, electricity consumption grew. In 2020, the power consumption went down due to the restrictions imposed by the government of Italy to curb the spread of COVID-19. By 2030, the annual power consumption is estimated to grow.

In recent years, the country’s energy policy has focused on the promotion of renewables in the country’s electricity generation. In 2009, the government announced a low-double digit percentage target of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources by 2020 which was achieved by the country well in advance in 2014.

Power consumption is the net electricity consumed by the end users by excluding losses and own consumption and after adjusting exports and imports in a calendar year (fiscal year in some cases). The unit is represented in Gigawatt hours (GWh) and the scope is limited to historic period.

Supply Security

Italy generates most of its electricity from thermal power. Thermal power (coal, gas, and oil) installed capacity accounted for a mid-double-digit percentage of cumulative installed capacity in 2020. Renewable sources contributed a mid-double-digit percentage, and the remaining share was contributed by hydropower. The most important aspect of the energy strategy of the country is the phase out of coal-based capacity by 2025. Alternatively, the country’s Ministry of Economic Development has set a target to achieve a mid-double-digit percentage renewable share in gross final consumption by 2030.

Italy is not known to possess substantial domestic fossil fuel reserves and is heavily dependents on imports. Italy is the major importer of gas after Germany in the European region and imports gas from Southern Europe and Russia via pipeline across Ukraine. The decline in natural gas production coupled with an increase in domestic consumption has made the country particularly dependent on gas imports.

Opportunities

Italy has a lot of old thermal power plants that have been in operation for more than 45 years. Italy is heavily dependent on electricity import which comprised of around a low-double-digit percentage share of its total consumption in 2020. Currently, the country needs to add new capacities as well as replace its old existing power plants to meet demand and reduce carbon emissions.
