Why did the power consumption in Turkey decline in 2020?
Turkey has a well-developed infrastructure and a market-oriented economy. It has a presidential system and is a member of international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Group 20 (G20), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Turkey is also aiming for EU membership but first the country must align many of its policies and standards to those of continental Europe.
Both power consumption and generation increased between 2000 and 2020. Consumption increased at a mid-single digit CAGR due to an increase in both industrial activity and demand from the residential sector. The electricity consumption witnessed a drop in 2009 due to the global financial crisis and again in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The consumption dropped in 2020 as compared to 2019 due to reduced demand from industrial and commercial sectors.
Power consumption is the net electricity consumed by the end users by excluding losses and own consumption and after adjusting exports and imports in a calendar year (fiscal year in some cases). The unit is represented in Gigawatt hours (GWh) and the scope is limited to historic period.
Impact of COVID-19
After the increasing spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the Turkish government decided to impose several restrictions to keep a lid on infections including shutting down some businesses, weekend curfews, closed borders, and restricted domestic travel. The reduced social and economic activities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic decreased Turkey's overall demand, especially energy demand.
With respect to power sector, the steps taken to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in power demand. Hydropower generation witnessed a steep decline in 2020 as hydropower has a significant share in Turkey’s electricity generation. Annual power consumption in the country fell in 2020 as compared to 2019. The sharp decline in power demand also impacted the energy prices owing to oversupply.
