The Power export in Brazil reached 395 GWh in 2020
The indicator recorded a historical growth at a CAGR of 36% between 2017 to 2020
Why did Brazil’s power export grow in 2020?
Brazil has been a net importer of electricity for the last two decades. In 2010, the country imported more electricity than it exported. In 2020 as well, electricity imports were higher than exports . The country’s electricity imports are expected to rise significantly in 2021 owing to a severe drought the country is facing. The country majorly depends on hydro plants for electricity generation, which are expected to the be affected due to the drought.
Supply Security
Brazil generates power from a diverse range of sources which include thermal sources (gas, oil, and coal), hydropower, nuclear, and renewable. Hydropower accounts for majority of the country’s annual power generation. In 2020, the hydropower generation share in total power generation was in mid-double-digit percentage. Thermal power is not used for base-load generation due to the high price of natural gas. Although Brazil possesses substantial gas and oil reserves, these are used primarily for export, as hydropower helps to keep electricity tariffs low. Brazil is a net importer of electricity.
