Power export in Mexico recorded a YoY growth in 2020

Mexico was a net importer of electricity from 2000 to 2002. In 2000, the country imported more electricity than its electricity exports. Since 2003, the country’s power exports have consistently exceeded imports. In 2020, the country imported less electricity than it exported. Mexico imports electricity from the US (mainly from Texas and California) and Guatemala. The country exports electricity mainly to the US.

Mexico has a federal republic government and practices a free market economy. The country’s economy is more oriented towards manufacturing, an outcome of its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the US. The industrial sector has the largest share of electricity consumption followed by residential and commercial sectors. The major exports of Mexico are cars, computers, vehicle parts, and delivery trucks, whereas major imports are integrated circuits, refined petroleum, and office machine parts. The US, China, Germany, Canada, South Korea, and Japan are Mexico’s major trading partners.

Supply Security

Mexico is a net energy exporter and possesses rich reserves of oil and gas. However, it does not have sufficient facilities to process all the crude oil that it produces. As a result, it exports most of its crude oil to the US, where the oil is refined and then sold back to Mexico. In addition to oil and gas, it also has large geothermal and wind potential. It is connected to Texas and California, in the north, and to Belize, in the south. These grid connections have been developed primarily for electricity export purposes. On the northern border in particular, grid connections are in place to facilitate the export of power from wind farms to demand centers in Texas and California.
