Why did Brazil’s power import decrease in 2020?
Brazil has been a net importer of electricity for the last two decades. In 2010, the country imported more electricity than it exported. In 2020 as well, electricity imports were higher than exports. The country’s electricity imports are expected to rise significantly in 2021 owing to a severe drought the country is facing. The country majorly depends on hydro plants for electricity generation, which are expected to the be affected due to the drought.
Electricity Trading
Brazil is actively engaged in electricity trading, which, prior to 2011 took place exclusively through bilateral contracts undertaken by power generators, traders, importers, and free consumers. To introduce greater transparency to the electricity trading market, the Brazilian power-trading platform, the Brazilian Intercontinental Exchange (BRIX), was launched on July 28, 2011. This development saw the participation of 30 power sector players, including Groenergia Comercializadora, Bunge, Companhia Energetica de Sao Paulo, Clealco, Compass, Coteminas, EletroNorte, Eucatex, Ibrame Laminacao, and Eneva. It is expected that BRIX will be developed further, with the introduction of the BRIX spot index and financial derivatives.
