Power import in Indonesia recorded a YoY decline in 2020

Previous to 2016, only some remote regencies in Indonesia were connected to and being supplied by Malaysia’s Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO). The Sambas regency and Kapuas Hulu regency in Indonesia were getting supplied since 2009. The large increase in electricity import in 2016 was due to the commissioning of the high-capacity West Kalimantan–Serawak interconnection.

As of 2020, Indonesia has no power exports. However, in September 2019, PLN signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with its Malaysian counterpart, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), to begin a feasibility study on exporting electricity to TNB. As per PLN, it is planning to connect its Sumatra network to TNB’s western network by 2028.

Indonesia is the one of the largest economies in Southeast Asia and fourth-most populous country in the world. Post-independence, it has seen tremendous economic development, partly because of government bringing new changes to the regulatory framework, which have increased investment from both the foreign and domestic private sector. Despite this, Indonesia struggles with poverty, unemployment, corruption, poor infrastructure, a complex regulatory environment, and unequal regional resource distribution.

Impact of COVID-19

The spread of the pandemic had a severe impact on country power market. Due to the damping on commercial activities in the country the power demand observed a decline. The power consumption in the country in 2020 fell compared to 2019. Both the commercial and industrial segment reported a sharp decline in power consumption. The declined demand of electricity has forced state-utility PT PLN to announce a renegotiation of contracts with the IPP (Independent Power Producer) or private electricity developers to avoid losses in May 2020.
