Power import in Italy recorded a YoY decline in 2020

Italy is a net importer of electricity since 2000. It imported more electricity than it exported in 2000. In 2020, the country imported more electricity compared to electricity exports. Italy is one of the largest importers of electricity in the world. A large part of its annual power consumption is dependent on electricity imports. Majority of the electricity imports are from Switzerland and France.

Italy is the fourth largest European economy and a member of European Union, Eurozone, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), G7 and G20. Italy’s economy is largely dependent on exports and its main trading partners are Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, and the UK. It mainly exports apparels, metals and metal products, luxury vehicles and motorcycles, food, agricultural products, and transportation equipment.

Supply Security

Italy generates most of its electricity from thermal power. Thermal power (coal, gas, and oil) installed capacity accounted for a mid-double-digit percentage of cumulative installed capacity in 2020. Renewable sources contributed a mid-double-digit percentage, and the remaining share was contributed by hydropower. The most important aspect of the energy strategy of the country is the phase out of coal-based capacity by 2025. Alternatively, the country’s Ministry of Economic Development has set a target to achieve a mid-double-digit percentage renewable share in gross final consumption by 2030.

Italy is not known to possess substantial domestic fossil fuel reserves and is heavily dependents on imports. Italy is the major importer of gas after Germany in the European region and imports gas from Southern Europe and Russia via pipeline across Ukraine. The decline in natural gas production coupled with an increase in domestic consumption has made the country particularly dependent on gas imports. Italy is also a major importer of oil from Russia, Libya, and Middle Eastern countries. Italy also imports majority of its coal requirement from South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Colombia, and the US. It possesses small deposits of coal reserves, most of which are in South Sardinia. Italy had introduced nuclear power in 1965 but due to safety concerns, the government chose to shut down all nuclear plants.

Opportunities

Italy has a lot of old thermal power plants that have been in operation for more than four decades. Italy is heavily dependent on electricity import which comprised of around a low-double-digit percentage share of its total consumption in 2020. Currently, the country needs to add new capacities as well as replace its old existing power plants to meet demand and reduce carbon emissions.
