E-tail giant Amazon has made net sales of $469.8 billion in the fiscal year 2021, which is 22% higher than the net sales of $386 billion in 2020. The net sales of Amazon have consecutively grown over the years. From net sales of $609 million in 1997 to net sales of nearly $470 billion in 2021, the online retail giant has not only expanded its business infrastructure to support the growing demand but has also diversified its product portfolio.
The online sales segment with sales of $222 billion is the largest segment making up 47% of Amazon’s consolidated net sales of $469.8 billion in 2021. The third-party seller service segment with $103 billion in net sales is Amazon’s second-largest segment, followed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) with a 13% contribution to Amazon’s consolidated net sales.
Amazon’s business is affected by seasonality, which historically has resulted in higher sales volume during the fourth quarter of every year (the holiday season in most western countries), which ends on December 31. The holiday season is the peak period for sales, Amazon regularly hires seasonal workers across the US during the fourth quarter of every fiscal year, to fulfill this seasonal surge in sales.
Online sales: Includes product sales and digital media content. Products range from a wide selection of consumable and durable goods that includes media products available in both a physical and digital format, such as books, videos, games, music, and software. These product sales include digital products sold on a transactional basis. Digital product subscriptions that provide unlimited viewing or usage rights are included in “Subscription services.”
Third-party seller services: Includes commissions and any related fulfillment and shipping fees, and other third-party seller services.
Amazon Web Services: Includes sales of advertising services to sellers, vendors, publishers, authors, and others, through programs such as sponsored ads, display, and video advertising.
