Cloostermans Robotics acquired by Amazon

  • The ecommerce giant’s recent investment in technologies to automate its logistics network consisted of the acquisition of a Belgian firm that develops technology to control the flow of robots through warehouses
  • According to the retail giant, Amazon started collaborating with Cloostermans in 2019 and used its technology to help lift and stack bulky pallets of items and wrap goods for delivery
  • Since purchasing Kiva, Amazon claims to have used more than 520,000 robots in its warehouses

The acquisition of Belgian company Cloostermans is the most recent in a string of purchases that ecommerce giant Amazon has made to automate its logistics operations. The Belgian company develops technology to control the flow of robots through warehouses, Amazon. com Inc. stated on September 9, 2022.

According to the retail giant, Amazon started collaborating with Cloostermans in 2019 and used its technology to help lift and stack bulky pallets of items and wrap goods for delivery. About 200 people work for Cloostermans, which was established in 1884 to produce machinery for the textile industry. It underwent a transformation to become an expert in engineering and automation. The company creates and manufactures warehousing equipment that, according to Amazon, is already used to transport and stack bulky pallets and totes, and wrap goods for delivery. The revenue and net profit of Amazon declined over the past quarter and past few years, respectively, according to GlobalData.

The market size of robotic process automation also decreased significantly during 2017–22, according to GlobalData.

According to Ian Simpson, vice president of global robotics at Amazon, “Amazon’s investments in robots and technology are enabling how we construct a better and safer workplace for our people and deliver for our customers.” Since purchasing Kiva, Amazon claims to have used more than 520,000 robots in its warehouses. The company claims to have just installed its first completely autonomous mobile robot, which could move around people and is not bound to specific parts of a warehouse. The acquisition comes as Amazon is pausing the aggressive expansion of its logistics network in the US. The company doubled the size of its delivery operations over two years as the pandemic-driven demand fueled a boom in ecommerce orders.
