Who are the leading players?
Bic Camera is a long-established leader among specialist consumer electronics retailers.
As well as its online store, the company store is working to get ahead of the omnichannel curve. It has improved the efficiency of online reservations for products collectable in store and rolled out barcode systems in more of its stores to enable customers to scan products with their phones.
Yamada Denki
Another of Japan’s old guard in the consumer electronics market, Yamada Denki has struggled more than its rival Bic Camera in the increasingly heated competition for online store traffic. Two major strategic developments have been its trialing of bitcoin payments for customers, and a partnership with the struggling furniture retailer Otsuka Kagu, with which it will share human resources development going forwards.
