Meta (Facebook): A decade since the IPO

On 1 February 2012, Facebook filed for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). After four months, on 18 May 2012, Facebook's made its stock market debut, the initial public offering of 421.23 million shares was priced at $38 a share, and the first trade was made at $42.05 per share, a gain of nearly 11%. The social media company was thus valued at over $100 billion and managed to raise $16 billion by selling those initial shares, making it the largest tech IPO in US history. By the end of the debut day, the session ended at $38.23 a share.

Over the past decade, the share price of Facebook has largely grown only to be periodically rocked by multiple data privacy issues, data breaches, and run-ins with the federal authorities over unethical practices.

Facebook, since its IPO has acquired a plethora of tech companies to boost and diversify its business. Facebook made one of the largest tech acquisitions in US history by acquiring WhatsApp for $19.6 billion in 2014.

Facebook has renamed itself Meta Platforms in October 2021. Since then, Meta has invested heavily in augmented reality and virtual reality. Meta has worked on developing its Oculus VR headsets, AR glasses, and virtual-augmented reality technology. The company is thus stepping towards building the metaverse, an open virtual world application.

The share price of Meta has quadrupled since its IPO, the Meta share was trading at $42.05 on 18 May 2012 and as of the end of trading on 18 May 2022, the stock traded at $201.
