Google, the search engine giant, had 156,500 full-time employees in 2021, an increase of nearly 16% year-over-year as compared to the 135,301 full-time employees in 2020. Google’s employee headcount increased the most from 2011 to 2012, with over 21,394 new full-time employees joining Google in various capacities and roles.

Workforce Hiring, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Google set its first company-wide goal for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in 2009 and since then Google has managed to launch initiatives, invest in various programs, and impart unconscious bias training to its employees.

Google had started sharing its diversity data publicly in 2014, but the hiring in 2021 stands out since the year led to the highest percentages of Black+ and Latinx+ new hires in the U.S. and women new hires globally. In the US, of the total new employees hired at Google in 2021, 46.3% were of the Asian+ ethnicity, 40.2% were of White ethnicity, 9.4% were Black+, 9% were Latinx+ and 0.8% were Native American+. Whereas, of the total hired employees, 37.6% of the workforce were women and 62.4% were men in 2021.

In 2019, Google used a system to report its hiring data, it is called the “plus system” (indicated by the + sign) because multiracial people are “plussed in” to each racial category they identify with.

“Native American+” includes Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Other Pacific Islanders as categorized by U.S. government reporting standards.

“Americas” includes all countries in North and South America in which we operate, excluding the U.S.

“Latinx” is an umbrella term that includes all those who identify as Latinx, Latino, Latina or Hispanic.
