The wireless telecommunications services market has been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Consumers have been forced to stay and work from home. This situation increased demand for fixed line internet services, but it reduced demand for mobile data. Mobile data subscriptions have become a very important segment for the market, and demand for mobile data has been driving growth in the market. Therefore, the lower demand for mobile data in 2020 put pressure on the revenue and margins of the leading players.

The outlook for the wireless telecommunications services market looks more promising over the forecast period. The market is expected to recover in line with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. If the vaccine proves to be successful, then consumers will return to their everyday lives and stop working from home. This will increase demand for mobile data and for wireless communications services in general, increasing growth in the market.

The existence of large players which dominate the market and benefit from economies of scale increases rivalry within the market, while the low level of differentiation leads to competition on price and quality.

Buyer power is increased by the existence of large corporate buyers, which exercise significant financial muscle and could negatively impact upon a player’s revenue if it decides to change companies. The power of individual consumers may be reduced in terms of financial muscle, but nevertheless, the loss of a client means the loss of long-term revenue for these businesses, given the fact switching costs are negligible. Brand loyalty is also weak as consumers look for the best deals available, boosting buyer power considerably.

The major wireless telecoms providers are 'facilities-based', owning and operating the infrastructure of networking equipment, masts and base stations. In some cases, though, there are independent companies supplying infrastructure facilities such as towers. Suppliers in this market also include mobile manufacturers as wireless telecommunications providers offer cell phone handsets to customers either free or at heavily subsidized prices. Supplier power is boosted by the fact that there are relatively few suppliers of this hardware.
