The total pay-tv accounts/subscriptions of Telecom industry in China has declined significantly between 2017-2020, the total pay-tv accounts/subscriptions recorded a single-digit YoY decline in 2020.

Pay-tv accounts refers to Number of accounts in a given country at the end of the year that subscribe to fixed TV service (either via cable, MMDS, Satellite/DTH platform, or IPTV) with at least one television set.

The sheer size of the Chinese population has resulted in China possessing the largest television audience in the world, which is positive news for production companies producing shows for Chinese television channels. According to the Digital TV World Household Forecasts report, the number of digital TV households in China will boast significant digital homes by the end of 2021. China will have the most pay-TV subs at the end of 2021. The country has never had a television license system meaning that all revenues come through advertisements and subscription fees. The current state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), established in 1958, is funded almost entirely through advertisements and a small tax paid by all cable-television subscribers.

Pat-TV market segmentation in China

China’s pay-TV service market is fragmented with many regional players jointly accounting for more than half of the total pay-TV subscriptions. Most of these regional players including Oriental Cable Network (OCN), Guangdong Cable TV Network (GDCATV), Shanghai Media Group (SMG), etc. offer cable TV services in the country. CBN is earmarked to consolidate these players as the first national cable TV provider.

China Mobile accounted for a low-double-digit share of the total pay-TV subscriptions in China in 2020, holding an estimated a mid-double-digit share of the total IPTV subscriptions. The operator’s sharp ascendence to leadership position despite its recent entrance into the pay TV business can be attributed to its acquisition of fixed operator China Tietong and rapidly deploying fiber, while leveraging its dominant position in mobile to engage in bundled plays. It is projected that the operator will retain its leading position in the pay-TV market through 2025.

China Telecom accounted for a low-double-digit share of the total pay-TV subscriptions in 2020. The operator also offered IPTV services and held an estimated a mid-double-digit share of the total IPTV subscriptions in 2020. China Telecom has been offering multiplay plans bundling fixed broadband IPTV service to compete in the market. Moreover, its widespread fiber-optic network enables it to deliver high quality services such as 4K HD TV.
