Facebook acquires PlayGiga in a bid to make it big in the gaming space

Following Facebook’s acquisition of PlayGiga;

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“Facebook has been trying make it big in the gaming space as part of its strategy to diversify its business operations and has taken a leap in this direction through the acquisition of Spanish cloud gaming startup PlayGiga for a consideration of EUR70m.

“Facebook is not a big player in the gaming market, however its focus in the area has increased in recent years. The company’s previous gaming efforts include the acquisition of Czech Republic-based video game developer, Beat Games in November, 2019, as well as the launch of the Gaming tab in the app’s main navigation menu in March 2019.

“The cloud gaming market has been growing and encouraging big players to venture into the space. For example, Google launched its cloud gaming service Stadia in November 2019 and Microsoft has plans to launch its cloud game streaming service in 2020.

“Acquiring PlayGiga is a well-calculated move as its streaming technology will help Facebook to launch its cloud gaming streaming service and join the league of big players in the space.”
