Which areas of financial services are you most interested in and why?
Individuals with bags of money have always done things differently. As F Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.” And the difference when it comes to finance is stark: while the hoi polloi bank, the rich private bank. Or, even better, they have a wealth manager, or their very own family office to manage their vast empires. This is a world beyond the services of finance, where anything is possible. And yet it is one being encroached by some wonderfully clever finnovators.
What do you think will be the hottest trend in fintech in 2017?
Trust cannot be coded. There is no algorithm for it. And yet trust is the cornerstone in the successful marriage of finance and technology, now reduced to the phrase “fintech.” Without trust all the promises of ‘disruption’ by fintechs will fall flat as clients are dissuaded from putting their money into hackable code. Indeed, this year ‘hacking’ will become the latest watchword following 2016’s alarming and prolific data breaches, with Yahoo shadowing all others in the largest data breach in history.
Which demo are you looking forward to in particular and why?
I’m going in with an open mind…
