US President’s comments could increase consumers’ confusion on health issues

Following the that Reckitt Benckiser, a leading manufacturer of hygiene products, has issued an urgent statement clarifying that disinfectant should not be injected after US President, Donald Trump wrongly suggested that this may cure COVID-19;

Jenny Questier, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view on the improbable situation:

“Globaldata found that one third (33%) of consumers were confused about the on-pack marketing or health claims made by brands*. This confusion will be exasperated by misinformation, especially when it comes from a ‘credible source’ such as the President of the US.

“At a time when misinformation could cost lives, it is the responsibility of all manufacturers to be absolutely clear on this and support consumers in making the right decisions for their health and safety. An outrageous claim such as this goes against on-pack health warnings, and brands and manufacturers of these products need to ensure that they do everything they can to counteract the comments. Now is the time for brands to build on their consumers’ trust and make sure they act responsibly

“Brands and manufacturers that can support consumers through this time will remain top-of-mind and be rewarded with their loyalty in future.”
