Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom tops global M&A legal advisers table for FY2018, compiled by GlobalData

Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has maintained its number one position in the latest global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers league table for FY2018 compiled by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

The American law firm held the top spot again in FY2018, with 189 deals worth $546.9bn, including the second biggest transaction of the year – Cigna’s acquisition of Express Scripts for $67bn. With a mix of deal sizes the company also achieved a value increase of 27.9% during the same period.

GlobalData, compiles the league table using real-time data tracked from all merger and acquisition, private equity/venture capital and asset transaction activity globally, also confirmed that Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz occupied the second position, with 85 transactions worth $473.6bn.

Prakhar Baghmar, Financial Deals Analyst at GlobalData, commented: “Interestingly, two legal firms in our top 5 – Davis Polk & Wardwell and Sullivan & Cromwell worked on Takeda Pharma’s acquisition of Shire, the biggest deal of FY2018 which helped them achieve third and fourth place respectively.”

Davis Polk & Wardwell conducted 123 transactions worth $467.9bn, while Sullivan & Cromwell achieved 137 deals worth $467.3bn. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, with 185 deals worth $433.5bn, held the fifth position. In deal volume terms Kirkland & Ellis topped the table with a significant 473 deals, worth $329.6bn.
