Apple’s entry to sports rights arena will change the playing field, says GlobalData

Following the news that Apple has signed an exclusive deal to show Major League Baseball on Friday nights;

Conrad Wiacek, Head of Sport Analysis at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“Apple’s deal with Major League Baseball is the latest example of another major streaming platform entering the sports rights arena. While a crowded field, the success Amazon has had with the NFL, Tennis, and English Premier League soccer, alongside Netflix’s success with the ‘Drive to Survive’ series, shows audiences are there and willing to migrate to new streaming platforms to access content.

“While the likes of DAZN wrestle with the fact that a sports-only streaming service may not be as viable as initially hoped, Apple TV+ is relying on the fact that sports will bring in more audiences and expose them to a range of other content, in which the company has invested heavily. Apple will be hoping that the current labour dispute is resolved to maximize its investment.”
