Infrastructure modernization under DevOps model yields new crop of disruptors, says GlobalData

Global events of the last two years have radically changed the way organizations’ IT departments operate by accelerating enterprise digitization, says GlobalData. The leading data and analytics company notes that, while cloud services have been essential for keeping businesses running, IT solutions have not always been optimized to support the agility necessary for frictionless app deployment and operational efficiencies.

Through newer efforts focused on infrastructure modernization, including the use of continuous integration, continuous delivery (CICD) pipelines and infrastructure as code (IaC) techniques, enterprises will be better armed with tools that drive automation agilities and support advanced software architectures, including event-driven microservices, serverless computing, and container orchestration. Answering the call are a number of DevOps/GitOps related start-ups that are disrupting the traditional application platform market segment.

Charlotte Dunlap, Principal Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The use of CICD pipelines is now a utility component of DevOps versus something companies aspire to. However, the path towards infrastructure modernization has not been easy. Cultural strife is still apparent between ops teams and enterprise developers. Fortunately, emerging open-source innovations targeting GitOps and CICD are playing a pivotal role in the DevOps evolution by helping to fill technology gaps through more comprehensive solutions. These technologies fit nicely into pipelines scripted for enabling Kubernetes integrations and workflows within a structure based on policies, and then automating that for continuous delivery.”

A flock of start-ups are filling out the cloud-native and DevOps ecosystem, offering disruptive frameworks and platforms around some of these technologies. Each supports some forms of integration, software delivery, and/or resource management tools which enhance the software supply chain by helping to abstract the tasks around tuning applications and managing resources necessary in the app development process.

Dunlap continues: “This new breed of DevOps platform provider is receiving newfound attention among IT operations teams for their ability to improve efficiency and reduce costs associated with deploying modern application architectures into production, while ensuring continuous delivery capabilities. Examples of these platforms include: StormForge Optimize Live; Codefresh Argo Platform; Weaveworks GitOps Enterprise; and TriggerMesh Integration Platform.”

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Infrastructure Modernization Unleashes the Software Supply Chain’, reveals that the industry will witness a heightened rollout of new continuous software delivery platforms in coming months, aimed at improving operational efficiency.

Dunlap adds: “Moving apps into production represents the most complex phase of the application lifecycle, due to its potential for disrupting not only customer service but companies’ security, policies, and governance requirements. Therefore, as part of the software delivery pipeline model, enterprises will prioritize investment in technologies which address the risky production stage of app development/deployment to get products to market.”
