The fixed communication services market in Myanmar will remain fairly resilient against COVID-19 crisis in 2020 and go on to register a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7% from US$144.7m in 2020 to US$203m in 2025, driven by growing revenues from the fixed voice and broadband services, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s Myanmar Telecom Operators Country Intelligence Report reveals that although currently the fixed services’ penetration of population in the country is low, the government’s initiatives to expand fixed infrastructure to narrow digital divide will drive the adoption of fixed services over the forecast period. Fixed broadband revenue is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.3% over 2020-2025 while fixed voice services revenues will expand at a CAGR of 3.9% over the same period.

Deepa Dhingra, Telecom Analyst at GlobalData, says: “Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) will remain the primary technology to deliver fixed broadband services in Myanmar during 2020-2025.  DSL will represent a majority 90.9% share of the total fixed broadband subscriptions by the end of 2020. Fiber broadband lines will proliferate over the forecast period, led by investments from operators such as MPT.

“MPT will continue to dominate the fixed voice and broadband markets during 2020-2025, on the back of its strong foothold in the VoIP services segment and monopoly in the DSL segment. The operator has been promoting fixed-mobile convergent plans integrated with fiber broadband services with speed up to 100Mbps to drive usage among residential users.”
