Artemis 1 launch marks start of renewed space race, says GlobalData

Following the news that NASA’s Artemis 1 has launched and is on a three-week journey to the moon;

Carolina Pinto, Analyst at Thematic Intelligence Team at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“This launch marks the start of a renewed space race and a reversion to Cold War tactics.Governments will increasingly use space exploration to express national interests and geopolitical dominance. For example, China aims to challenge the US’s dominance of the space economy market and has already expressed an interest in establishing a presence on the moon within the next 10 years.

“In the satellite market, China plans a national broadband constellation consisting of 13,000 satellites at completion. This will directly challenge SpaceX’s Starlink mega constellation. However, China will struggle to catch up as US companies have a half-century first-mover advantage.

“Beyond scientific exploration, space will become a playground for military competition. Satellites are already being used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (IRS), while point-to-point transport and on-demand launches are other investment focal points.”
