Saudi takeover of Newcastle United could be worth $200m in commercial deals

Following today’s news (Friday 8th October) that the Saudi backed takeover of Newcastle United has been completed;

Conrad Wiacek, Head of Sport Analysis at GloblalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“With the Saudi investment fund backed takeover of Newcastle finally ending the Mike Ashley era, the fans are now looking toward a bright new future with plenty of new investment. However, overnight Newcastle United has become an attractive proposition to commercial partners looking to invest in Premier league football in order to reach a global audience.

“With the toxic atmosphere surrounding Mike Ashley’s spell as owner now consigned to the history books, commercial partners will see a highly engaged fanbase in a one team city with highly ambitious owners.

“According to GlobalData report*, Newcastle generates the eighth most matchday revenue, but sits well outside the top six in terms of its kit supplier deal while its front of shirt deal is currently the 13th most valuable in the Premier League. With just 11 partners, Newcastle United have one of the smallest sponsorship portfolios in the league, a situation likely to change rapidly as the owners embark on improving the squad due to financial fair play.”
