Sequoia Capital was top VC investor in cloud space in 2020, says GlobalData

Nine out of the top ten venture capital (VC) investors by number of investments in the global cloud space in 2020 were headquartered in the US, while Sequoia Capital managed to top the list as the firm participated in 49 VC funding rounds, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

China-based Tencent Holdings was the only non-American firm to feature in the list of top ten VC investors in the cloud space. Other US-based firms to feature among the top ten included Accel, Salesforce Ventures, Insight Partners, Lightspeed Management, Bain Capital Ventures, Y Combinator, Bessemer Venture Partners, and GGV Capital.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “American VC firms continue to keep a watchful eye on emerging technologies and it’s no wonder we see these firms also dominating the list of top ten VC investors in the cloud space. Meanwhile, Chinese investors are becoming proactive though it is likely to take some time for them to catch up with their American peers.”

The top ten global VC investors participated in 226 funding rounds both in 2020 and 2019 also. Meanwhile, the proportionate investment value of these VC firms declined from US$2.3bn in 2019 to US$2.2bn in 2020.

Interestingly, Sequoia Capital, which registered the highest investment volume in 2020, also witnessed decline in its proportionate investment value by 6% compared to the previous year.

Among all the top ten VC investors, Insight Partners was the only firm that witnessed growth in investment volume as well as proportionate investment value.
